About Gold Coast Railroad Museum

The Gold Coast Railroad Museum is a one-of-a-kind indoor/outdoor history museum located in South Miami near Zoo Miami, dedicated to preserving Florida's rich railroad heritage. Founded in 1957 on the grounds of the former Naval Air Station Richmond — the second-largest WWII airship base in the U.

S. — the museum houses over 40 historic rail cars, including the Ferdinand Magellan, the only Pullman car ever built specifically for U.

S. presidents, and Florida East Coast Steam Locomotive #153.

Visitors can explore authentic train interiors on guided tours, watch model trains in action, and let kids play at Thomas the Tank Engine tables. Train rides are available on select days, with standard gauge, narrow gauge, and speeder options.

Admission starts at $12 for adults and $10 for children ages 3–12, with free admission for military and deeply discounted entry for EBT/WIC holders. The museum is one of three official Florida State Railroad Museums and operates as a non-profit.

Open Wednesday through Sunday.

Best Times

The best time to visit the Gold Coast Railroad Museum is on weekday mornings (Wednesday–Friday) when crowds are thinnest. Weekends, especially during Free First Saturday events and school holidays, tend to draw larger families. Miami's dry season (October–April) is ideal for enjoying the outdoor portions of the museum comfortably. Summer visits are manageable thanks to shaded and indoor areas, but the South Florida heat and humidity can make outdoor exploration less pleasant from June through September.

Reviews

Mostly positive, especially among families with young children. Visitors love the historic train cars, the Ferdinand Magellan Presidential car, and the interactive model train room. Some criticism around heat exposure on the outdoor grounds and the condition of certain exhibits.
